Some Song I Used To Like

With a song at number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, there’s no doubt you’ve heard of Gotye, the Australian artist credited with Somebody That I Used To Know. The track was released in July of 2011 in Australia, defending the number one spot for eight straight weeks, a feat second only to Savage Garden’s Truly Madly Deeply of 1996. From the obsession with this song, Gotye was named best male artist and producer of the year. After its tremendous success in Australia, Somebody That I Used To Know went on to claim the number one spot in New Zealand, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Denmark, and the USA.

Some stats:

4.5 million copies sold worldwide

542,000 iTunes downloads

166 million YouTube views

Glee has done a good job of overshadowing an alarming amount of songs by current artists and Gotye is no exception. April 10th’s episode covered Somebody That I Used To Know and has already achieved 152,000 iTunes downloads after its release on the 18th. That would be an inclination that the song was done well. Gotye thinks otherwise: “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instruments but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box. It made it sound dinky and wrong.”

Listening to it myself, I agree that the music was done almost exactly as Gotye’s own track, a great tribute. His comment on the vocals I think was a bit harsh if he was speaking strictly of the vocals. The visual of the episode was, in fact a bit “dinky.”
