Behind the Protein Obsession

Behind the Protein Obsession

With our world becoming more and more obsessed with being tone, fit and healthy, it was just a matter of time before protein became the newest obsession. With the promise that it will help you lose weight, get stronger and avoid age related issues with muscle loss…up to 71% of the population say they would like to incorporate more protein into their diets. Protein has always been a popular go-to ingredient with bodybuilders and those into fitness because they build muscle and create a feeling of fullness that aids in weight loss. Unlike other pro health ads that advocate limiting our intakes on fat, sugar and gluten, protein ads encourage viewers to have more of it. It takes away the feeling of losing out and restriction that comes with a diet, which people like. However, although more of than half of the population claim they want more protein in their diets, very little actually know how much they should be having or even why. People are under a false pretense that like every diet pill or low fat promise out there, the product will do the work for you, which is false. Dietician Andrea N. Giancoli states, “Protein in and of itself isn’t going to make you into a supermodel, get you to your ideal weight or make you into a lean, mean machine. You actually have to exercise and do the work to build that muscle.”

News--Dangers-of-Sleeping-with-your-Iphone

We’ve heard about the teenage girl that woke up to her Iphone burning a hole in her sheets but this time it’s even worse. Dionne Baxter, a 24-year old English woman got a rude awakening when she rolled onto her charging Iphone 4 while sleeping and received a severe 5 inch burn on her breast. Baxter said she awoke to serious pain and immediately rushed to the hospital. Due to the fact that she sleeps in the nude, there was no barrier protecting her from the burning hot Iphone. The burn has become infected, leaving Baxter with a large red wound. Despite the obvious heat dangers, doctors say that you should sleep with your Iphone away from you anyways as radiation emissions are known to severely disrupt sleep patterns. Yes, we should not sleep with our Iphones in bed. But why are Iphones getting to a temperature where people are getting severe burns from a mere touch regardless? And why is no one contacting Apple about this? It can’t be normal. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below!

Is Juicing Actually Healthy or Just Another Fad?

Is-Juicing-Actually-Healthy-or-Just-Another-Fad-

If you’re into the health blogs and all the new fitness trends, you may have heard of the new craze juicing. It basically is a method of blending all different types of fruits and vegetables into shakes and drinking them in place of meals as a way to detox your body, lose weight and even prevent disease. Although having more fruits and veggies in your diet is a good thing, many are skeptical about the fad. Some of the benefits of juicing include the fact that eating several servings of fruit a day can improve your lifespan and so for those who do not like to have salads everyday, this is a good alternative to get the same nutrients and minerals in. However, a healthy diet has to have a balance of protein, whole grains, dairy, fruit and vegetables and some of those things just don’t juice well. At the end of the day, juicing is a great alternative for those who don’t enjoy eating healthy to get in essential nutrients but it is not all that your body needs.

IceBucketChallenge-Getting-Soaked-to-Raise-Awareness

If you’ve been on Facebook lately, you might have noticed a large amount of celebrities as well as regular people posting videos of them dumping a bucket of ice water on themselves. And if you’re like any other normal person, you might wonder why. Well, the #IceBucketChallenge is actually a social media campaign to raise awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease that impacts the brain and spinal chord, causing progressive paralysis. The rules are simple. You have to dump a bucket of ice water on yourself, record it and post it online. After you do your video, you have to recommend other people, and if they don’t do the ice bucket challenge within 24 hours, they have to donate money to ALS research. Seems simple enough right? Well the social media campaign is actually taking off in a big way with donations coming in 10 times more often in a day then ever before. Guess people don’t like ice water dumped on them. Who knew? So how about it? Will you guys do the #IceBucketChallenge? Send us links of your videos or videos of your friends and we might be inspired to take the challenge ourselves.

Fist bumps Healthier Than Handshakes

Fist-bumps-Healthier-Than-Handshakes

While the fist bump may not be quite as accepted as a handshake in most social situations, those who wish to live a healthier life may wish to reconsider. David Whitworth, a senior lecturer in biochemistry at the UK’s Aberystwyth University-Ceredigion, studied the various greetings and, in a study published this week in the American Journal of Infection Control, said, “a short, sweet fist bump will transmit the least bacteria.” In fact, a handshake was found to transmit approximately 10 times more bacteria than a fist bump and two times more than a high five. Gross! It will be interesting to see if this study really changes the way we greet each other. Can you imagine a world in which a job interview ends with a fist bump or a high five? Neither can we but stranger things have happened for sure.

Celebrity Chef Rocco DiSpirito has found a way to combat his high blood pressure, high cholesterol and chronic fatigue, not to mention drop a reported 50 pounds! How did he do it? It’s a diet he calls The Pound A Day Diet. “The Pound A Day Diet is as high-velocity as a weight-loss program can get,” the Food Network star told Spry. “Only liposuction provides faster results. I did the research. I know it works better [than liposuction] because I personally tested it on over three dozen people.” The low-carb Mediterranean-style diet works in phases that DiSpirito says can help you lose five pounds every five days. The key is that every week the diet changes so you won’t plateau. Not only did DiSpirito find success with The Pound A Day Diet but also The View host Whoopi Goldberg, who is reported to have lost 30 pounds using DiSpirito’s plan.

Katy

Everyone from Michael J. Fox to Michael Jackson to Britney Spears has been the face of a popular soda campaign but it seems that a few consumer advocacy groups have had enough. The groups ran a full-page ad in Variety this week shaming “Roar” singer Katy Perry for marketing Pepsi to her young fans. Pepsi had been linked to the marketing for Perry’s 3D concert movie, as well as the campaign that let fans vote on which song the “Teenage Dream” songstress performed at the 2013 VMAs. She does not, however, have a long-term contract with Pepsi. Even so, the Variety ad targeted the singer, saying “Being popular among children brings with it an enormous responsibility. Don’t exploit that popularity by marketing a product that causes disease in your fans.” Michael Jacobson, executive director of the group, added that one out of every three children is overweight or obese, and a child is 60 percent more likely to become overweight if they drink just one sugary drink per day. So far, Perry’s people have no comment but it’s clear the star is not feeling the Joy of Pepsi right now.

Kim

It has  been about four months since Kim Kardashian gave birth to baby North West and the baby weight has seemingly melted off the reality TV star. On Sunday, she finally revealed her post-baby weight loss secret on Twitter. “I’ve actually been doing the Atkins diet & luv it,” she told her 18 million Twitter followers. Kim’s doctor approved the famous low-carb diet and advised her to start the diet in Phase 2 instead of Phase 1 because she was nursing. “It’s a very balanced way for her to lose the baby weight while continuing to properly care for her daughter,” Atkins Nutritionals spokesperson Jennifer Livingston told New York Daily News. “Being a new nursing mother, she needed adequate calories to be healthy for her child and keep up her milk production. What’s great about Atkins is that it’s not about counting calories or depriving yourself.” Sounds like she’s making a great diet choice. Kim K. has never looked better!
