Altered Carbon

A Netflix Original set in a distant dystopic future where life is digitally formatted. This story follows Takeshi Kovacs, played by Joel Kinnaman, who wakes up from being filed away in a prison database and thrust into the murder mystery of Laurens Bancroft, played by James Purefoy, a wealthy man who has no recollection of who killed him. Kovacs has to adjust to a new body and mysteries from both past and present. From episode one until the very end there are several twists and turns. Such as many new series, some would say that the show opens at a slow pace.

The first episode tries to acclimate the viewer with as much character knowledge as possible. The viewer has to learn some traits and why each character is in that moment. This becomes tedious at first, but quickly you are enveloped in the story and along for the ride. Each episode peels back the layers and answers the questions you are pining to learn. The most impressive roles were that of Dichen Lachman and Matt Biedel. Lachman plays Takeshi Kovacs’ younger sister. She is fierce and enthralling in every scene. Matt Biedel may be the most surprising and impressive. He truly shows his range and talent in this role where he plays a tough biker and a sweet grandma, all without changing his appearance. It is rated TV-MA, and I would highly recommend it to anyone of age. IMDB gives this show 8 out of 10 stars, but it most certainly deserves more.
