25-year-old Denzel Chan was pronounced dead Monday night after he and 4 others celebrating at the West Indian Day Parade were shot. The shooting took place in Crown Heights Brooklyn at about 2:45 p.m. Monday.
Aside from Chan, the victims were a 69-year-old woman who was shot in the shoulder, a 64-year-old man who was shot in the arm, a 36-year-old man who was shot in the head, and a 16-year-old boy who was shot in the arm. The four other victims were sent to nearby Kings County Hospital and are all said to be in stable condition.
The NYPD’s Chief of Patrol, John Chell, released a statement to the media after the shooting, “This was an intentional act by one person toward a group of people. We do not by no means have any active shooter, or anything of that nature, running around Eastern Parkway as we speak. We have multiple cops working very hard this weekend, very hard today to keep this community and to keep this parade safe, and we’ll be out here until the wee hours of the morning doing just that. Working hard, keeping this community safe.”
Chell continued, saying that the shooter was a slim black man in his 20s wearing a black shirt with paint stains and a black bandanna.
As of now, the shooter has not been arrested and the motive behind his acts is still unknown, but it is believed that this could have been a gang-related incident.
