Zhu Yi has been facing backlash from Chinese fans due to her performance at the Olympics. The backlash started after Zhu’s performance Sunday. She failed to land a jump and crashed into a wall. The negative commentary on her performance increased after her Monday performance where she fell down twice. Chinese fans have been insulting her, mocking her, and even going as far as to call her a disgrace.
Zhu Yi is a 19-year-old, American born, figure skater. She renounced her U.S. citizenship to be able to compete for China in the Olympics. Usually, an act like this would’ve been praised, but due to the unfortunate happenings at her events, quite the opposite occurred.
“ZhuYiFellOver” was a hashtag on a popular Chinese social networking site, Weibo. The site works in a similar way to Facebook and Twitter. Weibo is one of China’s largest social media platforms, because of this news carries very quickly through it and the hashtag has been viewed more than 200 million times. The hashtag has since been removed, but complaints are still being spread across the platform.
Zhu told Xinhua News Agency that what was being said on the Internet affected her. Then, she said, “I have trained very hard. The problem now is psychological. I will try not to be affected by the outside world.”
After one of her performances, Zhu also expressed, “I’m upset and a little embarrassed,” also adding, “I just really wanted to show them what I was able to do, but unfortunately I didn’t.” Fortunately, even though there was a lot of negative backlash, there was an overwhelming amount of support for the figure skater as well. Commenters have been expressing how proud they are of her, congratulating her, and giving her their best wishes.
