2022 Tony Winner Deirdre O’Connell Will Star in Sarah Ruhl’s Becky Nurse of Salem Off-Broadway

Deirdre O’Connell who won a 2022 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her amazing performance in Dana H. will star in Sarah Ruhl’s off-Broadway production of Becky Nurse of Salem for the Lincoln Center Theater this fall. 

Becky Nurse of Salem is a dark contemporary comedy following Becky (O’Connell) who is a modern-day descendent of the accused witch Rebecca Nurse of Salem. Becky works at the local Salem witch museum and seems to have all sorts of bad luck while she looks for love and redemption through spells, pills, and a local bartender. 

Becky Nurse of Salem will be directed by the Tony winner, Rebecca Taichman (Indecent). Previews of this play will begin on October 27, prior to the official opening night starting on November 21 at Off-Broadway’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater.

O’Connell will be joined on stage by amazing talents like Tina Benko, Candy Buckley, Alicia Crowder, Thomas Jay Ryan, Julian Sanchez, and Bernard White.

Becky Nurse of Salem will have sets by Riccardo Hernandez, costumes by Emily Rebholz, lighting by Barbara Samuels, sound by Palmer Hefferan, projections by Tal Yarden, and Caroline Englander is the stage manager.

Ruhl has also been the playwright for many plays including How to Transcend a Happy Marriage; The Oldest Boy; In the Next Room, or the vibrator play (Pulitzer Prize finalist); The Clean House (Pulitzer Prize finalist, The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize); For Peter Pan on her 70th Birthday; Stage Kiss; Dear Elizabeth; Passion Play, a cycle; Dead Man’s Cell Phone (Helen Hayes Award); Melancholy Play; Eurydice; Orlando; and Late: a cowboy song.
