High levels of what officials are calling ‘forever chemicals’ have been found in groundwater around at least 12 military sites in the Great Lakes region, contaminating drinking water across multiple states. Data released last week by the military and circulated by the Environmental Working
Group have shown PFAS (an abbreviation for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have “oozed into the Great Lakes and pose a risk to people who eat fish tainted with the chemicals.” The data also shows levels of PFAS going past federal health advice for two compounds.
