2024: The year of latex

Although latex has often been used in BDSM and role-play realms, in the last year, the evolution of the material has entered a new fashion era. A few notable celebrities such as the Kardashians, Emma Watson, Lady Gaga, and the Queen B herself, Beyonce, have worn the versatile material in a number of ways throughout the years. However, 2023 marked a notable change in the trend as latex, in all of its forms, appeared on media and stages throughout the world. Here is an overview of some of the examples from last year’s outfits:

For his press tour of Wonka in Japan, Timothee Chalamet offered a striking interpretation of something out of The Matrix with a long, black, latex trench coat. In Italy, Madonna used a pair of full-length latex gloves, paired with a beautiful black coat and fishnets, to give new meaning to the term “latex gloves.” At British Vogue’s “Forces of Change,” Maya Jama wore a full-body leather suit, complete with high-heels, that certainly reminded us of Catwoman, and how latex could be a power move when it came to an unforgettable outfit. In the same vein of unforgettability, no one could forget Sam Smith’s puffed-up suit at the Brit Awards. The singer of “Stay with Me” and most recently, “Unholy,” took on the award show with a look that both surprised and raised eyebrows. The suit was puffed at the shoulders and just below the waist, making onlookers truly reevaluate the extent of the use of latex and the word “fashion.”

With previously mentioned celebrities, as well as many more, using latex as another avenue for self-expression and versatility in the realm of fashion, one can wonder what is next for 2024. With the rise of more celebrities and influencers using latex to their advantage, it looks like latex is here to stay. And who knows, although it is the year of the dragon according to the Chinese calendar, perhaps it will be the year of latex as well.
