In our rapidly growing and fast-paced world, it can often be a hassle to find a little downtime, let alone enough time to stay in and cook a meal. This is where the modern convenience of fast food comes in handy; however, not all fast-food restaurants are viable options for those with more limited dietary needs. It’s taken years for restaurants to start offering a vegetarian menu that isn’t limited to salads and French fries, but what about those who are walking an even finer line? When it comes to fast food, vegans have long been forgotten. Left to fend for themselves in the culinary world. While this has led to some amazing vegan chefs and recipes, it isn’t all that fair.
Thankfully though, the world is changing. More and more people are switching to vegetarianism and veganism, whether it’s for health reasons or to do their part for animals and the environment, it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Restaurants have certainly noticed the growing trend, and some of them are even listening. Here are five fast-food chains that have expanded their menus to be more inclusive of vegans!
In fifth place is Chick-fil-a. This one came as a surprise to me, as previously I thought their waffle fries were the only vegan alternative, but as it turns out, it’s not! The chain also offers an assortment of vegan salad dressings and sauces. The main reason this establishment isn’t higher on the list is that in terms of “main courses,” the menu is short and does require some modification. Among the things you can get are the Market Salad, Spicy Southwest Salad, and Grilled Cool Wrap, but again, these items may need to be modified for specific vegan dietary needs (just ask them to hold the chicken and cheese and opt for a vinaigrette dressing).
4. Burger King
For the new vegans out there pining for a burger, burger king has you covered. The fast food restaurant offers a variety of burgers made with Impossible beef, a plant-based meat substitute. Just order an Impossible Whopper, and hold the cheese and mayo. What’s better is their fries are vegan too!
This once came as less of a surprise to me, as the company campaigns more humane values, stressing the importance of sustainability. At chipotle, pretty much everything goes for vegans, spare the meat, cheese, sour cream, and honey-vinaigrette. Vegans have a lot of customization options for burritos, tacos, bowls, salads, and more.
2. Taco Bell
Taco Bell has done quite a bit to become more accessible to those of us with specific dietary needs. The restaurant has an entire vegetarian menu that is verified by the American Vegetarian Association, and many, if not all, of them can be customized to be vegan. The next time you’re at taco bell, you might try the Veggie Burrito Supreme “fresco style,” the Black Bean Crunch wrap Supreme (hold the cheese and sour cream), or even just rice and beans.
1. Dairy Queen
I’ve saved dessert for last, and yes, you read that right; Dairy Queen has dairy-free options for vegans. Mister Misty Slush, Dilly Bars, and at some select locations, Star Kiss Frozen Treats are all vegan-friendly treats to satisfy your sweet tooth!
