One major music headline is the fact that the young Grammy award winning singer, Lorde, is making a powerful comeback. Lorde took a break from the music world, leaving fans wondering when they would be able to indulge in more music. Now, she is back making music that already has people talking.
Lorde first made her debut when she was 16 years old. Her song, “Royals” was one of her many hits back in 2013. After disappearing she has finally come back and decided that it is time to reclaim her spot on the top charts of music. In an interview on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show, Lorde explained that she took a break from music after completing the campaign for her debut album because “it was a kind of about processing what I want to say next, and I knew it just couldn’t be any old thing.”
Her song, “Solar Power,” came as a delightful surprise and features an uplifting beat accompanied by happy lyrics. This song alone will make you feel free. How can you deny that it isn’t a refreshing feeling as she sings, “Forget all the tears that you’ve cried, it’s over (over, over, over), It’s a new state of mind, are you coming my baby?”. Solar power is a sharp contrast to some of her melancholier songs, such as “Writer in the Dark”, which was released in 2017. Solar Power has inspired new TikTok trends and is accompanied by a well-produced music video. In this video, Lorde is glowing in a stunning two piece set on the beach. I think it is fair to say that Solar Power is a great way to return to the music industry.
Another new release of Lorde’s is her song, “Stoned at the Nail Salon,” is on the sadder side in terms of lyrics. Do not be deceived by the dreamy beat because there is a deeper and very powerful message behind this single. According to Lorde, “This song is sort of a rumination of getting older, settling into domesticity, and questioning if you’ve made the right decisions. While this song is very relatable, there are mixed feelings about this one. While some are head over heels for this new release, many dedicated fans are having a hard time letting go of Lorde’s old style of music. But just like us, Lorde is growing up, which means that her music is going to evolve. In a newsletter, Lorde gives us a sentimental message as she writes, “I hope you love this song and this side to the album. And I hope if you’re someone who also has a habit of tiptoeing up to a deep thought, then doubting yourself or dissociation, you know you’re not alone.”
I cannot deny that Lorde’s comeback is exciting. At the end of the day her music is her music and all we can do is sit back and buckle up the ride. As we anxiously await the release of her upcoming album, “Solar Power” on August 20th, Lorde has left us with a couple of beautiful singles with a powerful message.
