Anuel AA is a rapper and singer from Carolina, Puerto Rico. His songs frequently highlight violence and urban life in Puerto Rico, and he is regarded as a pioneer of the Latin trap trend. His music frequently includes samples and interpolations of popular songs from his adolescence. His legal difficulties and feuds with fellow Puerto Rican rappers Cosculluela and Ivy Queen, as well as with American rapper 6ix9ine, have made him a notorious figure in the Latin music industry.
He began making music at the age of fourteen and began releasing it online four years later, in 2010, before signing to American rapper Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group’s Latin branch. His 2016 mixtape Real Hasta la Muerte was well-received, but his career was put on stop the same year when he was sentenced to 30 months in jail in Puerto Rico for illegal firearm possession. During his stay in prison, he recorded the full of his debut album, during which time his kind of music grew in popularity.
On July 17, 2018, the day he was freed from jail, he released his debut album, likewise named Real Hasta la Muerte. The album was well-received both critically and commercially. He featured on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for the next six months, establishing his place as one of the top Latino performers. In 2019, he recorded the global hit single “China,” a duet with Daddy Yankee, Karol G, Ozuna, and J Balvin. Since then, he’s released his second album, Emmanuel, as well as the smash single “Me Gusta” with Shakira. Anuel AA announced his impending retirement from the music industry in November via Instagram and the release of a new song, citing family and relationship difficulties.
Recently, Anuel AA released a song in collaboration with Ozuna named “Antes.”
