Rare Beauty

September 16th, 2020   admin  Beauty   No Comments »

Selena Gomez recently launched her new makeup line.  Rare Beauty launched September 3rd through Sephora and   Containing 48 shades, this line focuses on making people feel beautiful without hiding their naturally unique features.  Instead of using makeup as a mask that people feel they need to be beautiful, this line is focused on helping people enhance their natural beauty.

After announcing her launch, the line’s popularity instantly grew.  The Instagram page amassed one million followers in minutes and now has a following of nearly two million.  The campaign, run through @RareBeauty on Instagram, highlights the brand’s mission to embrace unique qualities while encouraging people to rid themselves of unrealistic beauty standards present in the media.

Selena Gomez recently released a song called “Rare” as well, which furthers the idea that Rare Beauty is more than a beauty brand.  Focusing on the idea that her generation is surrounded by unrealistic standards of beauty throughout the media, Gomez has created a brand for herself that campaigns for people to be comfortable and confident with themselves.  She is not only doing this through her makeup brand, but also through interviews and music.

The launch came with a variety of products and shades.  Not only does her foundation come in 48 shades, but her lipsticks, highlighters, and brow products also come in many shades.  This aspect of the brand not only allows people to explore new, bold colors through their lips and highlights, but also allows for inclusivity.  The idea of inclusive shade ranges has been becoming more prominent over the past few years, and Gomez was sure to incorporate this into her message.

You can shop Rare Beauty now through Sephora and

The Benefits of Silk Pillowcases for Your Skin and Hair

September 9th, 2020   admin  Uncategorized   No Comments »

Are silk pillowcases worth buying? This is a debate that many have taken to the internet to discuss over the years. From wondering whether it is effective at preventing acne and other medical conditions to wondering if it is just a waste of money, there are hundreds of different questions surrounding silk pillowcases.

Although it may seem like a worthless investment, a silk pillowcase can be effective in many circumstances. They are not only good for your skin but are a noticeably comfortable product to add to your home. They come in a range of different colors and sizes, and I recommend not giving up on the idea of silk pillowcases before learning about their benefits.

Besides the fact that silk pillowcases are comfortable to sleep on, there are many other reasons why it may be time to trade in your usual pillowcase for this one. Silk pillowcases have been shown to keep your hair and skin hydrated, which can be beneficial for acne-prone skin. Although there are many factors involved in keeping your skin clear, silk pillowcases do not hold on to bacteria and germs like cloth and linen pillowcases do. Looking at the long-term effects of silk pillowcases, it is important to note that they also prevent wrinkles and can be helpful to those with naturally frizzy hair!

Though you can find these pillowcases all over the internet, a great place to look for one is with the company Slip. They not only sell these awesome pillowcases, but they also offer a wide range of different silk products that you can use in your everyday life. From sleep masks to hair ties, this company has got you covered when it comes to silk-based items.

Let’s Talk about Mask Acne

September 2nd, 2020   admin  Beauty   No Comments »

As the coronavirus spreads, many are finding that their lifestyle is changing in several ways. From having to quarantine to social distancing, everyone is learning that a new level of caution is necessary. One major thing that we all must learn to adapt to is wearing masks. While it does keep us safe and can be a new fashion statement, many can attest to that fact that mask acne or (as some call it) “maskne” is a real issue. Wearing a facial covering that traps in dirt and bacteria can lead to pesky breakouts and an overall sweaty feeling. Even though it may seem impossible to combat this, there are different ways to minimize the damage masks have on your skin.

The first option is simply using facial wipes at home and on the go. Taking a quick break, away from people of course, and wiping the bacteria off your face can ensure that unnecessary dirt is not getting trapped on your skin. The Honest Company and Burt’s Bees are two great companies that sell natural and refreshing face wipes.

Another way to lower the risk of mask acne is to avoid using makeup on the lower region of your face. When using makeup, you take on the risk of trapping dirt in your pores and adding a face mask to the equation can lead to an acne disaster. If you are finding that you are in the mood to leave the house with a full face of makeup, it is recommended that you go light on the makeup that will go underneath your mask. This includes not using a heavy foundation or all-natural powders.

A more obvious way to reduce mask acne is to use extra moisturizer if you tend to have drier skin. Ultra-dry skin is already a breeding ground for acne and having a mask on with dry skin can be detrimental to acne-prone skin. Some fan-favorite moisturizers include CeraVe and some Clean and Clear products.

Although there are ways to prevent mask acne, it can unfortunately still happen. This is where acne medication comes in handy.  One new trend is pimple patches. With pimple patches you simply put the patch on your annoying pimple, and it can supposedly reduce the size of the problem area. Additionally, it is never a bad idea to give your dermatologist a visit.  After all, they are the experts! Regardless of what precautions you take to help your skin, we are all in this struggle together, and mask wearing is incredibly important.

Lash Extensions Dos and Don’ts

August 28th, 2020   admin  Beauty, Uncategorized   No Comments »

In the past couple of years, eyelash extensions have become increasingly popular.  Not only are they a quick trick for effortless beauty, they are also becoming more affordable as the trend gains traction.  While many trends are fast fashion and fade quickly, it seems that eyelash extensions are here to stay as they steadily become more popular.

Many people get their extensions from a salon, but more affordable at home options are now available for those that prefer their beauty on a budget.  These DIY eyelash extensions are replacing once-popular beauty products such as false eyelashes.

While “falsies” are quite popular among those in the makeup and beauty communities, their temporary and uncomfortable nature has led many in the industry to turn to lash extensions.

Extensions, however, are not without their own faults.  Wearing makeup on the eyes has become increasingly difficult since heavy materials often cause the fillers to fall out.  Pressure, pulling, or even touching lash extensions can affect their longevity as well.

With all of these challenges, it’s important to know the ins and outs of lash extensions before you get them.

Once you have figured out where you will be getting your lash extensions, it is important to know not to apply mascara over your lashes.  This will cause them to fall out, and if your lashes are applied correctly, they should not need the extra lift.

Oil-free makeup remover is a necessity for those with lash extensions because heavy oils can damage them, and heavy weight can cause them to fall out.

Eyelash curlers are another thing to avoid for those with lash extensions.  The extensions should have their own beautiful curl, so it really comes down to finding the right lashes for you.

Finally, lash serum is extremely helpful for those with lash extensions.  These formulas won’t harm the fillers and will help to keep your natural lashes hydrated and healthy.

With these tips, you’re on your way to starting your journey towards beautiful, full, and (most importantly) healthy lashes.

Moon Cosmetics

August 4th, 2020   admin  Beauty, Uncategorized   No Comments »

Having self-confidence comes from feeling good within and loving the skin you’re in. But having acne-prone skin, oily skin, dry skin, or even eczema can be a battle. It can affect how a person feels about themselves and their appearance. Growing up I struggled with acne, more so when I was a teenager. Even today I am still not 100% confident with the little acne or blemishes on my face, especially having such a light complexion. However, I came across this Moon Cosmetics skincare line a few months ago, before the pandemic, and was blown away by the results I saw via Instagram. The results featured both women and men, of different ethnicities and complexions showing off their new layer of skin, with confidence. But right when the pandemic happened, their manufacturing was put on hold. Then I forgot all about the cosmetics line.

Ironically I had been looking for a new skin regime and product to try out that is black-owned. And here we are five months into the pandemic and I found the Moon Cosmetics line again! I came across the product via Twitter this time! I had seen so many of my followers who are predominantly African American raving about the product being available again. The restock of Rose Galore was what all the tweets were about and within minutes the entire page had crashed and then sold out, again! No, I did not get lucky and purchase my skincare products in time, but I am now subscribed to know when the next restock will be. The newly featured product, Rose Galore, is amazing for all skin types, including dry, oily, acne-prone, eczema, sensitive skin, and more.

Moon Cosmetics was created by young black entrepreneur Mariee. She has several different products to choose from, besides the new Rose Galore, to complete a skin regime. You can even add her products to your usual skin regime and still see great results according to the Moon Cosmetic webpage and customer reviews on Instagram and YouTube. Below is listed what is included in the Rose Galore beauty product.

The Rose Galore Product

The popular Rose Galore product from the Moon Cosmetic line is handmade with

  1. Avocado Oil
  2. Sweet Almond Oil
  3. Vitamin E Oil
  4. Organic Rosehip Oil
  5. Argan Oil
  6. Olive Oil
  7. Solar Power
  8. Love & Dried Roses

Although everything is currently sold out, you can still find out more about Moon Cosmetics, their Rose Galore product, and other products they offer. Here are the links!

Finding the Perfect Protectant: Sunscreen Edition

July 29th, 2020   admin  Beauty, Uncategorized   No Comments »

On a hot summer day, the beach or the pool is always an ideal location to keep cool and have fun. But with the sunlight beating down, it’s important to be wearing the correct brand of sunscreen to not only shield your skin from the dangerous UV rays but not damage your skin and clog your pores. Every face is different therefore requiring you to do some research before purchasing your beach day essential. In this article, I’ll give you some suggestions about different types of sunscreen and what kind of faces they’re meant for. I’ll even add my own experience as someone who has fair skin and is an avid sunscreen user.

Elta MD Skincare

As well as selling skincare products, Elta MD sells a line of Sunscreen products that are not only protecting from UVA but also UVB. Thus, lessening the risk for skin cancer and an overall more trustworthy product. You can purchase their sunscreen in tinted forms which is always beneficial for those who shy away from putting sunscreen on in hopes to get more tan. The facial sunscreens they offer specialize in protecting and calming skin prone to acne and also rosacea. Sunscreens created by dermatologists like Elta should be utilized by those who struggle with skin issues. Professionals do extensive research to create safe and reliable products specifically for troubled skin.

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer

Not only is this product is used as a sunscreen but also acts as a moisturizer to use when you wake up in the morning so you don’t forget. This product is known to be easy on sensitive skin and even soothes dry, itchy skin. Some beneficial elements include that it is oil and fragrance-free and also water-resistant. Aveeno is a great option if you are on a budget but still want to make the best choice for your skin. Compared to other high-end brands, Aveeno is affordable yet effective.

Neutrogena SheerZinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion

This sunscreen is the ultimate choice for the “white-nose” look as it is very difficult to rub in and has a thick consistency. BUT, before you rule it out, it has one of the best formulas to protect your skin from the sun. Although not ideal for everyday use, for days you may be in the sun all day long, the white residue would be very much worth it for full-day coverage. It has been known to not cause breakouts and be gentle on sensitive skin as well.

Sun Bum

Sun Bum is a notorious brand especially at shops like surf stores and any beach-related store not only because of their array of products but more importantly the effectiveness of all their products. On top of being cruelty-free, Sun Bum sells sunscreen, clear zinc, tanning oil, and many other products that are reasonably priced and receive positive feedback. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation outwardly recommends Sun Bum as your sunscreen choice. The sunscreen enriches your skin with Vitamin E and isn’t hard to come by as your local drugstore probably carries it.

My personal favorite is Sun Bum because even though I do have fair skin, I layer on the sunscreen and the sun tanning oil to still soak up some rays but avoid getting skin cancer or sun poisoning. As a plus, Sun Bum products smell great and are easy to apply and rub in.

New Way to make your Brows look SHARP

July 17th, 2020   admin  Beauty, Uncategorized   No Comments »

A new beauty trend that has been taking the cosmetics industry by storm is microblading. Instead of buying an eyebrow pencil every month or wasting money getting your brows tinted, people are turning mostly to certified estheticians to microblade their eyebrows. What is microblading you may be wondering? Manual microblading is semi-permanent tattooing that utilizes tiny, fine point needles rather than a tattoo gun, that scratches the skin to later deposit pigment into. The special thing about this procedure is that it can be for any amount of eyebrow hair, from none to just having missing patches.

As someone who has blonde hair, I have always been self-conscious about not only the lightness of my eyebrows but also their inability to remain full and thick. I researched different beauty products I could use to mask my lack of eyebrow definition but came across microblading places in my area. After setting up my appointment, I was anxious about the pain and the cost. Now having had my eyebrows microbladed for two years, it is worth every penny and every tear.

First off, as someone who has a low pain tolerance, any time the word needle is used I immediately tremble in fear. It is no secret that this procedure can be painful but the woman who did my eyebrows was quick to reassure me that it would be a quick pain and also used numbing cream to help. It lasted about two hours the first time I went, mapping out where the brows would be scratched on, testing colors, and then the actual microblading. There was some stinging and uncomfortableness but nothing unbearable. At first, the coloring was dark but after a week, it began to fade to a tone closer to my hair color and liking. After a few months, I returned for a touch up which was a lot quicker and easier to handle.

Although it was a hefty bill to front, the results and lasting look was worth it. Microblading can cost anywhere from $500-$2500 dollars depending on where you go. But the price is only this high the first time you go and will reduce once you are only returning for touch-ups. This procedure will also last up to a year untouched which again, will be worth the investment.

As for taking care of your brows, there are steps you can take to keep them lasting longer and looking fresher. The woman who did my eyebrows advised me to clean them regularly with aloe-infused wipes to wipe away the skin that will scab and shed naturally but never to pick at it. She also advised me to use Aquaphor whenever possible and especially when I am taking a shower or going into a pool/ocean.

Overall, although the price was pretty high and there were some commitments necessary for upkeep, I recommend this procedure to all my friends and anyone struggling with patchy or non-existent eyebrows. Being a semi-permanent procedure, if you hate them, they will fade with time but most certified salons always have a pro that will not disappoint. Although, before making an appointment make sure to do your research and state if you have any allergies or medical conditions just so the esthetician knows how to go about your procedure! Happy Microblading!
