About 97% of today’s cars are made with at least one touch screen. Technology has taken over the car industry, but the Biden Administration is looking to slow things down. Monday, the United States Commerce Department made a proposal to ban essential Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles.
The Biden administration rolled out a major plan on Monday to ban Chinese-developed software from internet-connected cars in the U.S. They say it’s all about national security, aiming to stop Chinese intelligence from tracking Americans or using the cars’ electronics to access the U.S. electric grid or other critical infrastructure.
Biden’s administration says it is about national security. The technology is largely Chinese-developed, and they are looking to put a stop to Chinese intelligence tracking Americans. They also want to prevent them from using the cars’ electronics to access the U.S. electric grid or other critical infrastructure.
Gina Raimondo, the Commerce Secretary, said “When foreign adversaries build software to make a vehicle that means it can be used for surveillance, can be remotely controlled, which threatens the privacy and safety of Americans on the road. In an extreme situation, a foreign adversary could shut down or take control of all their vehicles operating in the United States all at the same time causing crashes, blocking roads.”
