Brooklyn Subway Shooting Updates

Updates continue to flow in following a mass shooting that happened on the subway at 36th Street Station in Brooklyn, New York. The shooting left 30 people injured, and the city frightened. However, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

As of Tuesday morning, police are on a manhunt to find the suspect responsible for the shooting. On Wednesday morning, police identified 62-year-old Frank R. James as a person of interest in the crime and have since released a photo at a police hearing run by NYPD. However, Wednesday morning Eric Adams, Mayor of New York City, stated that Frank R James is no longer just a person of interest but is now a suspect and a wanted fugitive. The city of New York released an emergency report alert for James stating, “WANTED for Brooklyn Subway Shooting: Frank James, Black male, 62 years old. Any information can be directed to NYPD TIPS at 800-577-TIPS (8477). More info & photo: NYC.gov/notifynyc,” said the alert.

Correspondingly, Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. recently have gone under fire for spiking their fares during the mass shooting in what they call a “surge.” Surge pricing is when the rideshare app algorithm raises the fares when the rideshare demand is higher in a specific area. Rates for rides in the area of the mass shooting rose after emergency alerts were issued advising people to avoid the area. Uber spokeswoman stated, “As always, Uber strives to be a resource for New Yorkers aiming to get around New York City. If anyone on our platform experienced unintended charges during this emergency, we will work to get them refunded.”

As of Wednesday morning, new surveillance has been found to show James, the suspect, wearing an orange reflective vest and hard hat while he went through the turnstiles of the subway station. James can be seen wheeling around a piece of black luggage with his left hand on the subway and holding a black backpack in his right hand. Furthermore, NYPD released a new wanted poster with James as the suspect and additional photos of James inside the subway station.
