At around 7 a.m. Saturday morning beachgoers witness a car drive on the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier before it plummets into the Atlantic ocean. Video of the incident shows rough waters as the car brakes several times on the pier before driving off the edge. Many witnesses believed that maybe this was an accident.
What the video doesn’t show is the driver had to break through multiple barriers to get to the
pier.
Manon Scholl, an employee of Ocean Eddie’s on the pier recounts that day.
“My first reaction was I was feeling very surprised and then very sad,” she explains. “I was
really confused. I was like, what do you mean somebody drove off the pier? That’s obviously
very hard.”
“I have a lot of family members who have suffered through mental illness in the past and seeing this just made me think about all the times I could’ve protected someone,” Scholl states.
A local diving crew hired by the Virginia Beach Police attempted to retrieve the car on Sunday,
but due to rough conditions, they were unable to do so.
Virginia Beach Police Officer Jude Brenya explained where they are at with the search and
investigation.
“We do know where the vehicle is at,” states Brenya. “It’s still stationary in the last location that
we checked, so we are going to keep monitoring it. We are going to go back on the planning
board and try to see when we can come back out.”
It is expected for them to make another attempt early on this week given better water conditions.
It is still unknown the reasoning behind this as well as the details of who was behind the wheel
during the incident.
