Chaos Ensues in Kabul Airport as Taliban Takes Over Afghanistan

U.S. officials say that at least seven people died on Monday at Kabul’s international airport as thousands of Afghans rushed onto its tarmac desperately trying to escape the Taliban’s takeover.

They were so desperate to escape that some held onto an American jet as it was taking off, leading them to fall to their deaths. This comes as the Taliban successfully seized power in Afghanistan two weeks before the U.S. was set to complete the withdrawal of their troops after this war that has gone on for two decades.

On Sunday, the Taliban swept into Afghanistan’s capital after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country, collapsing the government and ending the costly two-decade-long U.S. campaign to build the country up. It took the Taliban under two weeks to advance through Afghanistan and take over.

Videos on social media show the chaotic scene going down in the airport; people climbing the blast walls to get onto the tarmac; hundreds running on the tarmac while warning shots are fired. Another showed people pushing and shoving to get up a staircase as others were hanging on to the railings.

According to AP News, there is also a video of hundreds of people were running alongside a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport plane as it moved down the runway. Some clung to the plane as it took off, leading them to fall out of the sky. This is day one of the now Taliban-ran Afghanistan.
