Flashback Athlete of the Month for September 2024

Bio

After making a name for himself at Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida, running back Chris Johnson committed to East Carolina University in 2004. During his collegiate career, he ran for 2,982 yards in four seasons and totaled 32 touchdowns. Despite this, he was projected to go in the second or third round of the NFL draft. That was until the NFL Combine where tied for the all-time fastest 40-yard dash, running it in 4.24 seconds.

This boosted his draft stock and landed him with the Tennessee Titans who took him with the 24th pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he ran for 1,228 yards and 9 touchdowns, quickly becoming the focal point in Tennessee’s offense. The following year he exploded for 14 TDs and 2,006 yards on the ground, making him only the sixth player in NFL history to reach 2,000 in a single season. With this historic feat came the nickname “CJ2K” and the award for Offensive Player of the Year.

He then went onto rush for at least 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons earning him three Pro Bowl nods. He was eventually released by the Titans in 2014 and signed to the New York Jets for one season, and the Arizona Cardinals for three before calling it a career. He retired in November of 2018 with 9,651 rush yards and 55 touchdowns. Although his career was short he cemented himself as an NFL legend with one of the greatest six-year runs in NFL history.
