Daniel Kaluuya statue revealed in London

Earlier this week British actor Daniel Kaluuya received a statue in the iconic Leicester Square in his hometown of London. Kaluuya’s statue depicts his character Chris from ‘Get Out’ falling into the “sunken place”. For those who have not seen the movie, the “sunken place” is a mental void into which Chris is hypnotized. The shot in the film shows him figuratively following into it, and creating one of the most well-known stills from ‘Get Out’.

The Square is filled with iconic scenes and characters from classic films. Some of these characters include Bugs Bunny, Batman, Paddington Bear, Harry Potter, and many more. A group of 5,000 film fans from the area took a vote on who the newest addition to the Square should be, with 1/5 of them voting for Kaluuya.

When asked about how it felt to be elected as the next statue he said, “That’s what I find the most special about it….we make art for people, we make art for people to watch and to think and feel things, so the fact that it’s come back in this way is the best blessing – I’m just really thankful for the people.”

He continued saying, “I just feel like, you work hard, put your head down, you just do what you feel is right, and just hope that it impacts and touches people…It’s more a representation of the people, as much as a representation of the people as it is my work. So it’s a reflection of what they wanted.
