DC Fans Start Online Discourse Over Rumored Hal Jordan Casting

The start of James Gunn’s DC Cinematic Universe is still a year away, but DC are already eagerly theorizing about the casting for the many superheroes to appear in the new universe. Unfortunately, a recent rumored casting choice for one of the many Green Lanterns has fans split.

According to Nexus Point News, Josh Brolin was reportedly offered the role of Hal Jordan in an upcoming Green Lantern project titled ‘Lanterns’, alongside John Stewert. ‘Lanterns’ was one of the many projects James Gunn announced during his DCU announcement last year. While ‘Lanterns’ is projected to be an HBO series. Due to Hal Jordan being a founding member of the Justice League, the character will likely appear in other films.

Not only is Brolin a veteran actor, but he is no stranger to superhero movies. Some of his most notable roles include Thanos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Cable from ‘Deadpool 2’.

For those unaware, Hal Jordan is one of the most recognizable Green Lanterns in DC Comics. Debuting in 1956, Jordan is a former military pilot turned test pilot who becomes the successor to Abin Sur, a dying Green Lantern who Jordan found crash landing on Earth. Jordan then inherited a Green Lantern ring, which grants its users the ability to create anything out of light constructs by pure willpower.

The rumors of Brolin being offered the role quickly revealed a significant divide among fans. While some are ecstatic to possibly see Brolin in the role, others are vehemently against it. This divide is mainly due to his age. The very few live-action and animated adaptations Hal Jordan has had over the years have all kept the character in his mid to late twenties, the age range when Jordan would have acquired the ring in the comics.

DC has aged up superheroes in adaptations before, with the Batman of this universe likely being in his forties. Regardless, it was also rumored that DC was generally looking for a white man in their forties to portray the character.

Nexus Point News later alleged that the potential candidates include Chris Pine and Timothy Olyphant. The Insider added that Matthew McConaughey and Ewan McGregor were also on that list.
