John “Unique” Ayala has been our Guardian Angels Washington DC leader for close to 30 years. He has seen a lot of street violence in that time. This year he suffered the tragedy of losing his grandson Davon McNeil to gunfire on the night of July 4th. 5 young men have been arrested and will go on trial for Davon’s murder.
Just a few weeks later Octavia Brown who has been a Washington DC Guardian Angel for 15 years lost her cousin, Christopher Brown, to gunfire. A cop was also shot but she survived at the same block party in N.E. DC. No arrests have been made.
Both Unique and Octavia have turned their grief into recruiting a “new generation” of Guardian Angels. They have partnered up with the community groups all over DC to combat the violence that has risen in their city. They are an example of what we should all be doing to combat the growing violent crime that is rising throughout urban America.
