Shams Charania of The Athletic reported yesterday that the Memphis Grizzlies would waive former MVP Derrick Rose. Rose played a pivotal role for the Grizz last season running their offense without star guard Ja Morant.
For those who don’t know, Morant was suspended for flashing a firearm on a social media livestream. Morant had massive shoes to fill, and although he is up there in age, D-Rose was able to do a nice job taking over for him. Rose averaged eight points, three assists, and two rebounds in just under 17 minutes per game.
Rose, who turns 36 in just two weeks now hits free agency and will look to join his seventh NBA franchise. With that said, I think it is more than likely that Rose lands somewhere he has already been before. I see the most likely suitors for him being the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Derrick Rose started his career in Chicago where he was the youngest NBA MVP of all time. He was born and raised in the Windy City, and if the end is near this is the perfect place for him to retire. Although if he signs with the Bulls it is very unlikely that he will win a championship in his final year or two. That is why Minnesota is the best fit for Rose. The T’Wolves were missing a productive backup PG off the bench last season and D-Rose fits in perfectly with that need. Minnesota just drafted an explosive guard in Rob Dillingham and Rose could not only help develop Dillingham but give the team valuable minutes if he is not yet NBA-ready. Plus the Timberwolves should be in the mix for winning the title this year, something D-Rose has still never accomplished.
