Does Barcelona Need Lionel Messi?

As we near the end of the soccer summer transfer window, one big signing stands out among the rest. Yes, of course, that is Lionel Messi’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain from his beloved club F.C. Barcelona. After seventeen successful seasons, culer’s fans had to bid farewell to their cherished talisman. The process was long and gut-wrenching for the fans, so one can only imagine how difficult it was on Messi.

Despite the Messi transfer news stealing the spotlight, Barcelona was far from quiet during this transfer window. Sergio Agüero, Memphis Depay, and Eric Garcia are just a few of the names brought in to try and regain their dominance in La Liga. Despite their updated squad, t the big question on all of our minds: how will Barcelona get on without Lionel Messi? Over the course of his career at the club, not only has he scored 672 goals, but he’s also become the face of the club. Messi is Barcelona, and Barcelona is Messi or was.

It’s no secret that Barcelona are in no need of attacking talent with six quality players as options for the front positions. Those include Antoine Griezman, who Barcelona paid 120 million euros for, Ousmane Dembélé, kid wonder Ansu Fati and previously mentioned Agüero and Depay. Barcelona’s potential issue this season and the problem last season was chemistry. Despite Griezman’s success at his previous club, Atletico Madrid, he struggled to replicate his goal-scoring form at Barcelona. Not to mention he and Messi played in the same position, which presented issues for both parties. The hope is that with Messi gone, Greizman can fill the gap left behind.

If Ronald Koeman, Barcelona coach, can help the players find chemistry and confidence in one another, we just might witness another strong Barcelona team. So far, the team is off to an impressive start. They’ve won all of their international friendlies, including the Joan Gamper Trophy final against Juventus and their first match of the season. If they remain consistent, the La Liga trophy will be within arms reach. As hard as it is to admit, it is possible to win La Liga without Lionel Messi, but Barcelona need to make sure they don’t become the creators of their downfall.
