Every Man for Himself – Rescuers Won’t Save Americans Who Stayed Behind in Ukraine

The storm is coming. The earth rumbles as Ukraine is getting ready for Russia’s potential invasion. U.S. officials are telling Americans to leave Ukraine immediately because there would be no rescuers to save them if they decided to stay in Ukraine in the midst of the fight. President Biden did not want to get involved with the battle between Ukraine and Russia as it may lead to World War III. The Americans who are currently in Ukraine could wrongly believe that the Air Force planes would come and get them like in Afghanistan when the U.S. was withdrawing its troops from the country. The White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, said, “The United States does not typically do mass evacuations…the situation in Afghanistan was unique for many reasons.”

During the evacuation in Afghanistan, American diplomats and workers were rescued at the Kabul airport as the Taliban took over the country. Over 100,000 Afghans who helped the United States were included in the evacuation. It seemed to be a success for the Biden administration to rescue people in the Afghanistan withdrawal, but the general public criticized this because the Taliban took over Afghanistan in an instant. Recently this month, there was a single ISIS suicide bomber who carried a suicide bomb. When the bomb activated, 170 civilians and 13 U.S. troops were killed.

For that reason, Biden pleads with Americans in Ukraine to return to the States so they can be safe from the upcoming possible war. He requested the U.S. embassy in Kyiv to be moved to Lviv where the city is near Poland’s border. Ned Price, the State Department spokesman, said, “I think there may be a misconception that what we saw in Afghanistan is something that the U.S. government can undertake anywhere and everywhere in the world.” Americans were also warned to avoid Belarus and Transnistria because they border Ukraine. It is estimated that 6,000 Americans are in Ukraine. There may be a higher number with the unknown number of tourists.

Nonetheless, any rescue mission that occurs can invoke casualties or hostages if the rescue is not operated well. Russian media said that the Americans are being ridiculous because this was just an empty threat and the Americans were making a big deal out of this. Secretary Antony J. Blinken said, “It’s the most prudent thing to do because, again, my personal responsibility is to the safety and security of our people.”
