Everything We Know so far about Taylor Swift’s New Album Midnights

After Taylor Swift’s Instagram grid became aligned (a move all Swifties have been trained to recognize as a signal of a new album), Swift’s fans have long been speculating about the potential release of a new re-recorded album. Yet, fans were shocked when Taylor Swift announced the release of a brand new album in an acceptance speech Sunday night at the VMAs. The album, named Midnights, is set to be released on October 21st this fall. Here is what we know so far.

The announcement came with an Instagram post of the album’s cover, revealing the number of songs on the album is Taylor Swift’s lucky number: 13. The caption read, “Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21st. Meet me at midnight. “

Although the song titles have yet to be released, there has already been speculation about what genre of music Swift will be experimenting with on this new album. Fans who were looking forward to an album that emulates the dreamy upbeat positivity of Swift’s 2019 album Lover may be disappointed.

The album’s cover depicts Swift in soft grunge makeup reminiscent of the 2014 Tumblr aesthetic. An era of the internet where alternative indie pop rock artists like The 1975, Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Two Doors Cinema Club, The XX, Vampire Weekend, and The Arctic Monkeys covered every teenage girl’s Tumblr page.

This genre switch suggested by the cover’s aesthetic is also reflected in the album’s title. Swift’s previous album, Lover, a story of finding a relationship so beautiful she associates love with the color gold, was initially meant to be called Daylight. This can only mean that the album titled, Midnights, will be in direct opposition to the happy stories of Lover. Instead, fans speculate that this will be a collection of pop-rock songs, similar to specific tracks on her self-written Speak Now album. This idea is further supported by the fact that, when searched on Apple Music, Midnights’ genre is categorized as Rock.

It also seems important to note that Midnight’s release date, October 21st, is Kim Kardashian’s birthday and the anniversary of Kanye West’s album Donda. Some may brush this information off, but when it comes to the world of Taylor Swift, there are rarely any coincidences.
