Everything You Need To Know Before Watching The 2022 Billboard Music Awards

This year, the Billboard Music Awards are taking place in Las Vegas Nevada on Sunday May 15. Before watching the award ceremony, here is everything you need to know.

The American rapper, Diddy, will be hosting this year’s ceremony, 25 years after winning his first BBMA.

“The Billboard Music Awards truly represent the artists and where music is today, so I’m excited to curate the biggest live performances and surprises. The world has to tune in to see,” host Diddy said in a statement last month to Us Weekly.

According to billboard reporter Paul Grein, The Weekend is the competitor to look out  for in this year’s BBMA, leading the pack in up to 17 different categories. The Weekend is a finalist in categories including top artist, top male artist, and top Hot 100 artist.

Doja cat is leading the women finalist with up to 14 nominations, some including top artist, top female artist, and top Hot 100 artist.

On the other hand, Justin Bieber could possibly make BBMA history by being the new leader when it comes to most decorated artists. Biber is currently sitting in third place with 21 wins, but with 13 nominations this year, he could give Drake (29 wins) and Taylor Swift (23 wins) a run for their money.

As for the performers in this year’s awards, The Red Hot Chili Peppers dropped out of the lineup due to “unforeseen circumstances,” according to a statement released by Billboard on Wednesday. They are now being replaced by artists such as Machine Gun Kelly and Dan + Shay, who are both finalists in this year’s nominations.

This would have been The Red Hot Chili Peppers first performance at the BBMA’s since 1999, but it is now MGK’s debut performance at the award ceremony instead.

Travis Scott’s billboard music performance will be his second public event since the horrific tragedies that took place in his Astroworld festival back in November 2021. Another controversial performer at this year’s BBMA is Morgan Wallen, who has come under fire for saying the N-word in a leaked video.

As for the nominations, all focus will be on the Top Artist category, which includes an impressive list consisting of The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Drake, Swift, and Olivia Rodrigo.

Besides the Top Artist Category, everyone will be applauding Mary J. Blige, who will be this year’s recipient of the 2022 Icon Award recipient.

Make sure to stream this year’s Billboard Music Awards on Sunday 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
