Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has once again flexed his executive authority, this time by suspending the top prosecutor in Orlando, State Attorney Monique Worrell of the 9th Judicial Circuit. Worrell’s suspension comes amid the 2024 presidential race, further intertwining local governance with national politics.
Last year, DeSantis made a similar move by removing State Attorney Andrew Warren, a twice-elected Democrat in Tampa. This decision was based on Warren’s commitment to not pursue criminal charges against those seeking or providing abortion or gender transition treatments. Additionally, Warren’s policies included refraining from bringing charges for certain low-level crimes.
DeSantis announced the suspension during a news conference in Tallahassee, emphasizing his duty to uphold laws enacted by the Legislature. The suspension followed an investigation triggered by the fatal shooting of a television reporter, Dylan Lyons, a 9-year-old girl, T’yonna Major, and others. DeSantis’ office scrutinized Worrell’s handling of the case, particularly her treatment of the 19-year-old shooter, Keith Moses, who had a criminal record and gang affiliation.
Beyond the specific case, DeSantis cited a pattern of decisions made by Worrell’s office. He expressed concerns about her avoidance of minimum mandatory sentences, even in cases involving serious charges such as gun crimes, drug trafficking, and child pornography. DeSantis also highlighted the recent shooting of two Orlando police officers by a 28-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history.
However, the suspension has ignited claims of political motivation from Democrats. Critics argue that Worrell’s removal is a blow to local control and democracy. Worrell, notably the only Black woman in Florida elected to serve as a state attorney, has strong support among constituents who view the suspension as a broader attack on democratic values.
DeSantis appointed Andrew Bain, an Orange County judge, to replace Worrell. While the governor frames the situation as a necessary step to ensure justice and public safety, critics remain skeptical of the motivations behind the suspension.
