Athlete of the Month for April 2022
Gio Urshela, a professional Columbian baseball player, has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) since 2015. Throughout his career, he’s played for the Toronto Blue Jays, The Cleveland Indians, the New York Yankees, and is now playing for the Minnesota Twins.
Since an early age, Gio Urshela has loved sports and baseball, where he recalls playing with broom sticks and tree branches with his brothers and cousins where he grew up in Columbia. At the age of seventeen, Urshela signed with the Cleveland Indians as an international free agent, making his debut playing for Dominican Summer League Indians and Arizona League Indians. In 2015, Urshela was promoted to Columbus Clippers. Because of his speedy progress and amazing performance, in June 2015, Urshela was called up to the major leagues where he first signed with Cleveland.
While Urshela played for New York, he became the first Yankee’s third baseman to hit a post-season grand slam against his former team, the Cleveland Indians. He is a talented base-baller, as a third baseman. Watching him play, it’s easy to see his strength, agility, and quick reflexes. He was recently traded from the New York Yankees to the Minnesota Twins as the MLB awaits their 2022 season.
