I’m showing my age when I talk about a television show called The Courtship of Eddie’s Father!
The theme song to the show was a song called… People let me tell you about my best friend… that song always reminds me of the beautiful friendship that Gleyber Torres and former Yankee Gio Urshela have.
While teammates on the Yankees Gio would literally become a big brother and best friends. Gleyber would learn a lot from Gio in all facets of life… especially baseball.
When not together they would play online games like War Zone.
When they were teammates they literally helped each other by bouncing ideas regarding baseball offensive or defensive techniques to each other.
The relationship was such that Glauber would honor his honorary big brother by naming Gio the Godfather to his son Gleyber Junior.
The two ex-teammates had really hoped to be reunited this offseason season when Gio was a free agent however the Detroit Tigers came in with an offer that was more favorable for Gio and his family.
Today when I got to the Detroit Tigers ballpark I would find Gio and Gleyber sitting in a golf cart just talking about the game that they both mutually love just before the start of the game.
I’m not surprised at all by my findings because I know and love the respect and admiration that they have for each other.
I honestly believe that the advice that Gio has given Gleyber throughout the years has helped make him a very good Yankee.
I also understand the love that Gio will always have because of his time as a Yankee.
The highest honor that an athlete in New York can receive off the field is The Thurman Munson Humanitarian Award… it’s not a coincidence that each has received the great honor!
