Congratulations goes to Luis Gil of the New York Yankees for winning the American League Rookie of the Year.
The National League rookie of the year went to Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Gil is the first Yankees starting pitcher to win the award since Dave Righetti in 1981.
Gil was extremely valuable to the Yankees this season especially with the fact that Gerrit Cole spent so much time on the disabled list.
Gil’s 15 victories was one behind the 16 that team leader Carlos Rodon won.
Besides winning the rookie award it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that Gil may have been the Yank’s most valuable pitcher this season.
The voting was one of the closest in the history of the award with Gil edging out Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser 105 votes to 101.
The Pirates Skenes had an 11-3 record with a 1.97 ERA. Pretty exceptional considering the Pirates had a very so-so season.
The one person that can speak on this subject more than anyone is the youngest rookie of the year Dwight Doc Gooden who won the award at age 19. Doc has become a big-time fan of Gil so he observed him very carefully all season long.
Doc loves his mechanics and enthusiasm towards the game. Doc feels that Gil’s growth potential is very high. He envisions this young man eventually becoming a rotations ace.
Doc hasn’t seen Skenes as much but from what he has seen he absolutely loves.
What’s not to love Gooden stated. His ability and body language tells the whole story. He’s the real deal.
Gooden also feels that baseball commissioner Rob Manfred should be commended for the state of baseball. Doc loves how the game is being represented from a media perspective and as a true baseball fan and father and grandfather, he is just happy that the Commissioner and his staff have made us fans feel so good about the game again.
