Great Alternative Artists You Need to Listen to Now

In a society so saturated with artistic creativity, it’s no surprise that most people have a difficult time picking their favorite anything, but especially music. With hundreds and thousands of artists releasing hundreds and thousands of tracks, surely there is amazing music that we haven’t yet heard.

Being an avid music-lover, I enjoy finding new songs and artists, both in and outside of my preferred genre, but no matter how many new pop or rap songs I enjoy listening to, nothing quite compares to the beauty and artistry of alternative music.

Alternative music, despite being a wide and well-liked genre, is any music that is outside the musical mainstream. Opposite of pop, alternative music is categorized by its expansive style; from indie rock and folk to punk and gothic, alternative music is known for its eclectic and original variety.

I’ve compiled a list of the best alternative artists that you need to listen to now because alternative music smashes the basic structure of most popular genres like conventional rock, pop, or country. More emotional depth and meaning is found in some of the greatest of alternative artists.

Check out these artists:

Beatie Boys

These New York Natives and alternative hip-hop group were the first white rappers to gain a substantial following, being responsible for the growth of rap’s mainstream audience. The core members are MCA (Adam Yaunch), Mike D (Michael Diamond), and Adrock (Adam Horovitz).

Founded in 1983, this group of middle-class Jewish kids evolved from a punk quartet into the trio of MCA, Mike D, and Adrock. Their tour with Madonna launched their career in 1988, gaining their attention in the press. When they toured with black rappers Run-D.M.C., they gained credibility with rap listeners. The Beastie Boys only got bigger from there, concluding in their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Some of their best songs include: “Get it Together,” “Shake Your Rump,” “Intergalactic,” “No Sleep till Brooklyn,” “So Wat’cha Want,” “Sabotage,” and the iconic and most popular “No Sleep till Brooklyn.”

Linkin Park

Linkin Park is known for its extensive incorporation of multi-genre styles in the early 21st century like metal, beat-driven hip hop, hardcore rap and punk, electric and even polished pop structures. Each member of the band possesses different talents to make beautiful art, Linkin Park is composed of all but one of the original members, after Chester Bennington passed away in July 2017. The band now comprises of vocalist/rapper/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Ferrell, DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn, and drummer Rob Bourdon.

As their debut album Hybrid Theory (released in 2000) suggests, they were truly a hybrid force of many talents. Their debut album came with great success, receiving three Grammy nominations and sold over several million copies; after their sales topped ten million, this album earned “diamond status,” making Hybrid Theory one of the most successful debuts ever.

After dropping two more albums, Reanimation (remix of Hybrid Theory) and Meteora, in 2004, Collison Course was released in 2004, where Linkin Park collaborated with the rap-icon, Jay-Z. (This album is nothing short of glorious.) This album launched one of the lead singers’ (Mike Shinoda) rap career. They went on to make several albums before the passing of lead singer, Chester.

Some memorable and famous songs from Linkin Park include: “Somewhere I Belong,” “Numb,” “What I’ve Done,” “Heavy,” “One More Light,” and so many others.

Imagine Dragons

Imagine Dragons is an alternative pop-rock band originally from Las Vegas, NV, consisting of lead singer Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman. They first gained exposure from their award-winning single, “It’s Time.”

With multiple awards and recognition, this band has made a huge impact in the music world. Imagine Dragons has won three American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, one Grammy Award, one MTV Video Music Award, and one World Music Award.

They have sold over 75 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. Some notable titles of theirs include: “Believer,” “Demons,” “Thunder,” “Whatever it Takes,” “Radioactive,” “Bad Liar,” “Birds,” “Natural” and “Wrecked.”

While these are only a look at three amazing alternative artists, many others come to mind:
