Green Day is a immensely popular American punk rock band. Initially formed in 1987 under the name Blood Rage, the band consisted of lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. Their drummer, Tré Cool, joined later in 1990.
Getting their start on the Bay Area punk scene, the band released their first album in 1990 with the indie labell Lookout! Records. Their second 1991 album Kerplunk made records as one of the best selling indie albums at the time.
The band’s success only climbed with time. Remaining a stable trio, Green Day is now considered to be one of the most successful punk bands of all time. With 12 studio albums, the band has toured globally and sold over 75 million records worldwide.
They were among the few bands that helped punk successful break into mainstream pop culture. Unsurprisingly, ther success has generated a plethora of awards, including winning five Grammy’s. Overall, Green Day has won over 92 awards in the US and Europe.
