On Saturday 14 November, The Gothenburg Guardian Angels patrolled as they do every night the avenue to Järntorget. Järntorget and Andra långgatan have now been classified as Gothenburg’s largest crime and drug scene. They have been patrolling the area for 2 months now and stopped many fights, harassment and disrupted the drug trade. They rescued a 16-year-old girl who was drugged at the pub and was unconscious when they came upon her. Last Saturday, they saved the life of a 17-year-old boy who took a cocktail of drugs and alcohol. While taking care of the young man, he had a cardiac arrest five times because of the groups training in CPR, they were able to revive him every time until ambulances, police and fire brigade arrived. We are very proud as an organization of the work they have done so far.
As you may be aware the country of Sweden handles the pandemic in a different way. Unlike some countries where we have chapters that have gone into a total lockdown Sweden has never done that. Their health care policy is one where they apply the concept of herd immunity. They have had their ups and downs with this just like every other country whose approaches are different. The bottom line for the Guardian Angels, wherever they are, is that things can be done working within their countries’ restrictions because of Covid-19. We all salute the effort in Gothenburg and hope eventually to have Guardian Angels in other cities throughout Sweden.
