Met’s fans are no strangers to having a team anthem, with Edwin Diaz’s trumpet walkout song sweeping the nation back in 2022. This time around, it’s not just a walkout song, but a single performed by one of their own players. Shortstop José Iglesias officially released his single “OMG” on June 28th, under the name Candelita. It quickly became popular not only among New York fans but worldwide.
Candelita has released a few songs before, but nothing as popular as this. “OMG” debuted at number one on Billboard’s Latin Digital Song Sales, and the song sold over 1,000 downloads during its first week in the US alone.
During the MLB All-Star break, the league invited Iglesias to perform during the weekend’s festivities. He seemed to be a fan favorite, as the crowd even sang the song back to him. Iglesias spoke with the MLB Tonight show before his performance and said, “After every W in the clubhouse we play it, we have a good time with it the fans kick in and it’s now worldwide…It’s a dream come true, it’s about life, it’s about enjoying the moment.”
The song has also created a new celebration for the Mets. They have a large sign in the dugout that reads “OMG” in Mets orange and blue. The sign is brought out when a New York player hits a home run and they get to hold up the sign and pose for a picture with their teammates.
The Met’s seem to be having a lot of fun and Iglesias and his music have become a massive part of that. The vibes are very high in Queens right now, where the Mets have a win-loss record of 16-11 since the song was released.
