Is it Time to Throw Out Your Soy Milk?

Soy milk is a classic milk alternative that is undoubtedly delicious. It goes great with coffee and cereal. It won’t upset your stomach like regular cow’s milk. In lieu of its good components, soy milk is a controversial topic among the health food community. With both positive and negative effects, is it worth it to keep stocking up on soy milk?

While there are some benefits to soy milk, soy contains estrogen-like compounds called isoflavones. These compounds may lead to fertility and thyroid problems. According to Good Housekeeping, “Some health experts also trash-talk soy because of its potential to be an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can mimic estrogen in the body, which may lead to a hormone overload.” Consuming too much soy can also increase the risk for breast cancer. Good news though! Soy milk is ok to consume in moderation if you do not have a soy intolerance. Is it suggested that you consume less than three servings per say, given that you are not allergic to soy.

Just like many things in the food community, soy is controversial. Despite all the downsides, there are several health benefits to consuming soy milk. In moderation, soy milk can help lower cholesterol levels and promote heart health. It can also help lower blood sugar and blood pressure. Some health experts are even saying that consuming soy can help improve fertility.

At the end of the day, I think it is safe to say that having a variety of milks in your fridge can never hurt. With both the positive and negative effects of soy milk, it is best to consume this milk in moderation.
