Underground Artist of the Month for February 2023

Bio

Singer, songwriter, guitarist, writer, and illustrator. These are the words that describe the many talents of Jeffrey Lewis. Lewis is a New York based, anti-folk artist. He and his bandmates have performed under many different band names, but his current lineup has him, Brent Cole (drums), and Mem Pahl (bass and keys) performing as Jeffrey Lewis and the Voltage.

His anti-folk music sound is a mixture of garage and indie, and he has been described by The Guardian as “…kicking our ramshackle fuzzbomb jams….” What truly separates his music from others’ are his witty, fun, creative, inspired, and somewhat sad lyrics. His music tells stories and makes poignant observations about his own life, and he does so in a syllabic musical style.

In addition to being a talented musician, Lewis has also written and illustrated his own comic book series called “Fluff.” He has been working on Fluff since 2004 and is still adding to it, similarly to how he is still making music. Jeffrey Lewis and the Voltage released their latest album, Bad Wiring in 2019. The band has been signed on to multiple record labels throughout their nearly 30 years of making music, including Rough Trade Records, and now most recently, Moshi Moshi Records, and Don Giovanni Records. While Lewis and his bandmates have toured around the world and steadily grown a name for themselves, they have yet to become a part of mainstream music culture.
