Reggaeton Artist of the Month for June 2021

Bio

Jhay Cortez, a reggaeton connoisseur, has risen through the ranks of Universal Music Latino’s roster to become one of the label’s most financially successful musicians. The singer, rapper, and composer achieved a Top 10 success on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs list with a remix of “No Me Conoce” (2019), the same year he published his long-lasting first album Famouz, shortly after making his headlining debut.

Jesús Manuel Nieves Cortez, based in New Jersey and originally from Puerto Rico, specifically Rio Piedras and Carolina, began writing and recording at the age of 11. He was young when he worked on his first significant releases, “Los Verdaderos” by Zion & Lennox and “El Patrón: Invencible” by Tito El Bambino. The latter was named “Best Contemporary Tropical Album” at the 2011 Latin Grammy Awards. Over the years, Cortez co-wrote scores of songs for various artists, and in 2018, he rose to new heights as a collaborator on Cardi’s “I Like It,” Anuel AA’s “Amanece,” and Bad Bunny’s “RLNDT.”

During this period of success, Cortez secured a deal with Universal Music Latino and released the Eyez on Me EP, which marked his solo debut. He had an appearance on Sky’s “Bajo Cero” in early 2019, which enhanced his profile ahead of the full-length Famouz. A remix of “No Me Conoce” featuring J Balvin and Bad Bunny was a highlight of the album. The song swiftly climbed the Hot Latin Songs list, finally reaching the Top 10.
