Flashback Athlete of the Month for December 2020

Bio

Joe Namath was an American Football player who played most of his AFL and NFL career as a Quarterback for the New York Jets.  He played college football for Alabama during the years of 1962-1964.  After playing for the New York Jets, he finished his career with the Los Angeles Rams.  In 1985, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Growing up in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Namath excelled in all sports.  After graduating high school, he received offers from several Major League Baseball teams, but ultimately went on to play football at the University of Alabama in order to receive a college education.  After signing with the New York Jets in the AFL, Namath was named AFL Rookie of the year and became the first professional quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in a season.  At the height of Namath’s career, he led the Jets’ to a 16-7 win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in January 1969.  This win gave legitimacy to the AFL and made Namath the first quarterback to start and win a national championship game in college, a major professional league championship, and a Super Bowl.
