Latin Artist of the Month for September 2022
Karly-Marina Loazina, better known as singer/songwriter Kali Uchis, spent most of her childhood in Virginia while also spending time in her parents’ native Colombia. As a teenager growing up in Alexandria, she learned how to play the saxophone and piano while also developing a deep interest in visual arts. Her recorded debut, made in 2012, was a self-released mixtape titled Drunken Babble.
Within three years, she released several singles, including “Know What I Want and “Lottery.” Additionally, she collaborated with artists like Snoop Dogg, GoldLink, Tyler the Creator, and Major Lazer. After releasing singles independently, she started releasing her material through major-label Virgin EMI.
Throughout 2017, Uchis began adding to her discography of featured appearances via singles and tracks by the Gorillaz, Tyler, Migel, Juanes, and Bootsy Collins. She previewed her debut album with the single “Nuestro Planeta.” By the end of 2017, “El Ratico” with Juanes made Uchis a Latin Grammy Nominee.
Most recently, in 2020, she released her first-ever Spanish-language LP, the grammy-nominated Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios). A deluxe edition of Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios) was released in 2021.
