After much controversy over the original cover, Vogue has released a new cover with Kamala Harris for its February issue. This cover features the vice president in a light blue suit against a gold background and will appear in a limited print edition.
The original cover of the magazine featured Harris in a more casual fit and converse sneakers. This image sparked much backlash and many people criticized Vogue for the poor lighting and lack of respect for Kamala. While the Vogue team chose the original photo with good intentions, the informal nature of the photo seemed to undermine the accomplishments and milestones of the vice president. After the backlash, Vogue released a statement saying, “The team at Vogue loved the images Tyler Mitchell shot and felt the more informal image captured Vice President-elect Harris’s authentic, approachable nature– which we feel is one of the hallmarks of the Biden/Harris administration.”
Both cover photos were taken by Tyler Mitchell, the first Black photographer to shoot an American Vogue cover. The new digital cover features Harris in a more professional light and will be printed at limited quantity. Despite the controversy, Kamala’s appearance on the cover of Vogue is a major milestone.
