This morning, comedian Kathy Griffin took to Instagram and Twitter to reveal that she has lung cancer and will be undergoing surgery that will result in half of her lungs being removed. In the post, Griffin assured fans and well-wishers that she “should be up and running around as usual in a month or less.”
The comedian pointed out that, despite her never smoking, she still got lung cancer, but her doctors are optimistic because it is at stage one and only contained to her left lung. She also said that being vaccinated may have helped her situation. “The consequences for being unvaccinated would have been even more serious,” the comedian wrote. Griffin used this post to remind everyone reading that they should stay up to date on their medical checkups as “it’ll save your live.”
“It’s been a helluva four years, trying to get back to work, making you guys laugh and entertaining you, but I’m gonna be fine,” Griffin wrote.
This is alluding to the rough four years the comedian has had in which she faced backlash for taking part in a 2017 photoshoot where she posed with a fake bloody head that resembled Donald Trump. In the years since, Griffin lost her sister, Joyce Griffin, to cancer in September 2017, and her mother, Maggie Griffin, in March 2020 after her battle with dementia. Despite these setbacks, the comedian still seems optimistic for not only her surgery, but also for the future.
