Fashion Designer of the Month for September 2022
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Kenneth Ize has been reinterpreting traditional West African fashion with his namesake label that he founded in 2013. Ize was raised in Austria, where he studied fashion and design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. After graduation in 2013, he launched his label at Lagos Fashion Week. However, he took a two-year hiatus to pursue an MA at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. After graduating with an MA in Fashion, the designer relaunched his brand in Spring/Summer 2016.
Ize collaborates with design groups and artists across Nigeria in Kware, Kogi, and Lagos. Additionally, Ize supports small communities of weavers local to Lagos, his hometown, and is constantly influencing the creative arts curriculum in local schools to create traditional fashion.
In 2019, the brand unveiled womenswear. For the Fall 2020 Paris Fashion Week Show, Kenneth presented a collection full of pieces rendered in aso oke, a traditional Nigerian fabric made of handwoven squares. Ize was also a finalist for the LVMH Prize and joint winner of the Arise Fashion Week Award for “Designer of the Year.”
