Keto: Is It Worth It?

The ketogenic diet is a diet that cuts carbs and is high in fats.  Many people claim that this greatly benefits one’s health and helps with quickly losing weight.  The science behind this diet is based on the fact that greatly reducing carbs sends the body into a metabolic state known as ketosis.  In ketosis, the body quickly burns fat for energy and transforms fat into ketones within the liver.

While there are several different types of keto diets, the standard ketogenic diet is 75% fat, 20% protein, and only 5% carbs.  This standard variation of the ketogenic diet is one of the only ones to have been studied closely.  Additionally, it is the most widely used variation, with the other variants being used mostly by athletes.

There are many studies that show the fantastic benefits of the keto diet, but there is still much controversy over whether or not the diet is worth the risks.  Because this diet is vastly different from normal dietary patterns, it does come with various risks.  The restriction of carbs can cause hormonal shifts, water loss, as well as changes in blood lipid and blood sugar levels. While these side effects may seem dangerous, they are short-term and can usually be mitigated.

There are many benefits to the keto diet.  Studies have shown that going keto reduces the effects of many diseases and conditions.  Even those without conditions that are typically reduced through keto see health benefits such as increased endurance, enhanced cognitive function, and stable energy levels.  With a thoughtful approach to keto, one can easily reap these benefits safely.

As with all diets, it is very possible that the ketogenic diet could be harmful; but that is generally reliant on how one implements the diet into their lifestyle.  A thoughtful approach can lead to many benefits aside from just weight loss, but it is important that the diet is conducted safely.  Everyone’s body is different, so each person must take their personal needs and goals into account when beginning a new meal plan.  As with any diet, the goal should always be to improve your health and wellbeing above all else. If the keto diet proves to have adverse side effects in your situation, there are many other healthy options to explore in order to find what exactly works best for you.
