Australian striker Sam Kerr and American midfielder Kristie Mewis are expecting a baby in 2025. In an Instagram post, Kerr and Mewis revealed that Mewis is carrying their child. Photo booth images show the two holding their ultrasound and Mewis showing off her belly. “Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025,” the caption read.
The couple revealed their engagement to People magazine in 2023 and sparked a fun rivalry during the Women’s World Cup, where they competed against each other. As captain of Australia’s hometeam, dubbed the “Matildas,” Kerr led the team to finish fourth overall.
Kerr plays for Chelsea, and Mewis for West Ham United outside their national teams. In an exclusive interview with People, Mewis described Kerr as “My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics.”
Fans first noticed the spark between the two soccer players during the Tokyo Olympics when the American and Australian teams faced off for the bronze medal. After beating Australia, Mewis rushed to comfort Kerr with a hug after the game. Just days later, the two confirmed their romantic relationship on social media.
Unfortunately, the post received negative backlash from homophobic internet trolls. Kerr’s club team manager, Sonia Bompastor, immediately rushed to her player’s defense, calling the comments “unacceptable” and saying, “That’s just crazy for me to understand how people can react like this.”
Despite the hate comments, many others have found comfort and inspiration from Kerr and Mewis’ relationship. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and how they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” Mewis said. “I love to share my relationship on social media. So I think if we can change the way one or two people feel about themselves, they can look at us and see that we’re happy and we’re trying to be as successful as we can, and we’re an out gay couple. I think that’s so important.”
With three years until the next Women’s World Cup, Kerr and Mewis will be ready to compete against each other once again, but this time, they’ll have one fan in the crowd cheering them both on.
