Last week Apple Music announced that this year’s Super Bowl Halftime show will be headlined by rapper Kendrick Lamar. Lamar has had a huge summer with his hit “Not Like US” topping the charts week after week. His public beef with Drake and recent reascent to the top make him a great candidate for the gig. That said, an even bigger rap name who has wanted the Halftime show for decades voiced his discouragement.
Lil Wayne who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana (where this year’s Super Bowl is taking place) has been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. When he found out he was not selected, he took to social media to post a video explaining how the snub was a hard pill to swallow.
“That hurt a whole lot,” said Wayne. “I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown, for automatically mentally putting myself in that position. I thought there was nothing better than that spot, on that stage, on that platform in my city. I feel like I let all of ya’ll down for not getting that opportunity,”
He went on to thank his supporters, like Birdman and Nicki Minaj who spoke out in his defense. “Your words turned into arms and held me up when I tried to fall back.” He said.
Despite not headlining, many have speculated that Wayne will have some kind of appearance during the halftime show in his hometown city, but we’ll have to wait and see if the “greatest rapper alive” gets to fulfill his wish.
