Bio

Lisa Velez, known by her stage name Lisa Lisa, is a renowned American singer who gained fame in the 1980s as a member of the band Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Born on January 15, 1967, in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, Lisa Lisa hails from a Puerto Rican background. She grew up speaking Spanish at home and learned English in school. Lisa Lisa’s passion for music was evident from a young age, as she sang in her church choir, alongside her six sisters. She was part of a traveling singing group that performed Motown hits and songs from old Broadway musicals.

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam came to life when Lisa Lisa successfully auditioned for the Brooklyn production team Full Force. Their debut single, “I Wonder If I Take You Home,” was recorded soon after the group’s formation in 1985 and was initially released independently. They later signed with Columbia Records, re-releasing the single, which went on to become a hit, reaching the R&B top ten in the US and the top 20 in the UK. Throughout the 1980s, the group achieved numerous hit songs, solidifying Lisa Lisa’s status as a prominent figure in the music industry.

Lisa Lisa then pursued both solo singing and acting careers, releasing the solo album “LL77” in 1994 and continuing to make appearances in various projects over the years. In 2009, she released a full-length album titled “Life ‘n Love” and has remained active in the music and entertainment scene, recently signing with Snoop Dogg’s Army in June 2019.
