Lizzo surprises fans with “Moulin Rouge” performance and hints her next move could be Broadway

Lizzo confessed on TikTok that one of her biggest dreams is to be on Broadway. The singer posted a video last Sunday of her short yet very emotional rendition of “El Tango de Roxanne” from “Moulin Rouge! The Musical.”

“El Tango de Roxanne” is performed in the musical by Aaron Tveit, who won a Tony Award in 2020 for playing the musical’s male lead, Christian. Fans went wild when they saw Lizzo’s interpretation of Christian, both singing and acting-wise. Since then, they have been commenting on how great it would be to see her as Ursula, Cleves, or Momma Morton.

She captioned her video by saying, “I think I need to be in a musical now. I’ve been on Broadway, TikTok, and I can’t get this song out of my head.”

The official TikTok account for “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” commented on Lizzo’s cover, saying “Great work, Bohemian! Now do it up the octave.” To which Lizzo answered with a blushing emoji.

Fans of the musical also praised her performance in the comments of her post, with many encouraging her to make her Broadway dreams come true.

This is not the first time Lizzo has mentioned Broadway on her TikTok account.  Last week, when instructing people how to properly dance along to her new hit “About Damn Time,” Lizzo, who is a showgirl at heart, revealed she would have loved to be in the “Spring Awakening” reunion show, which had the original cast of the coming-of-age and Tony-winning rock musical get together again to perform the songs during a one-night-only event.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers and with a book by Tony Award winner John Logan, choreography by Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh and music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Tony Award winner Justin Levin. It has 10 Tony awards under its belt, including Best Musical.

Ashley Loren, who currently stars in the show as its sparkling diamond, Satine also showed her support, commenting: “Come join us onstage at @Moulin Rouge! The Musical Broadway ASAP!!!”

Aaron himself also expressed his approval of Lizzo’s cover with some clapping emojis.

How Attending Live Theater Builds Empathy

Theater as an art form is ancient. The performing arts have been a part of human culture since forever, which isn’t surprising given our never-ending hunger for entertainment and joy. But our need for theater also serves a deeper purpose: it explores the human condition in a way few other mediums are able, and has the power to change attitudes, encourage empathy, and promote prosocial behavior among audience goers. It allows us to open our minds and flourish as people–and that’s a fact supported by science.

Film adaptations of theatrical productions frequently do them injustice. Post-Production tools change the way the story is told, and the relationship between storyteller and audience member is fundamentally different.

What’s with Revue Theatre in Buenos Aires?

Revue Theatre has been at the center of Argentinian culture for over a century. By the end of the 1800s, scandalous Revue Plays were getting canceled due to their flashy satirization of the political and social landscape at the time. More than any other space, Revue Theatre contributed to the visibility of Argentinian tango.
