Lizzo this weekend headlined BottleRock Napa Valley over Memorial Day Weekend, and a lot of controversy was sparked by calling out the racial and political divide taking place in Wine Country where she was performing.
After many hateful comments online about her weight and physical appearance, Lizzo spoke out saying how hard being a role model online is and that she is on the brink of quitting the music industry.
A tweet by Layah Heilpern British Youtuber, gained a whopping 37 million views and featured a video clip of Lizzo dancing on the stage. Accompanied by hateful remarks and comments about her eating habits.
Lizzo tweeted: “Today was one of those days where I was very angry,” she said. “Very angry at the world. I saw a lot of mean s— about me on the internet, and I wanted to give up. There are days where the hate outweighs the love so badly that I wanna quit music and disappear.”
“Y’all don’t know how close I be to giving up on everyone and quitting and enjoying my money and my man on a F–KING FARM.”
“I JUST logged on and the app and this is the type of s— I see about me on a daily basis,” Lizzo told the 2.3 million followers on her Twitter account, which she recently set to private to help filter out toxic messages. “Then someone in the comments said I eat ‘lots of fast food.’ I LITERALLY STOPPED EATING FAST FOOD YEARS AGO … I’m tired of explaining myself all the time and I just wanna get on this app w/out seeing my name in some bulls—.”
I cannot even explain how upsetting this is to hear; as someone who is also a musician, Lizzo works her butt off and is a fantastic role model to young and older women all over the nation. Not only that but she is extremely talented and creative. To back that up she has four Grammys, a Prime-Time Emmy Award, two Soul Train Music Awards, a Billboard Music Award, and a Guinness World Record. I left a few out. Our music industry needs to be bringing people up, not down.
