The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed their eighth World Series title in the team’s history on Wednesday evening, defeating the New York Yankees in five tense games. The Dodgers came out on top, winning the series 4-1.
While both teams featured superstar players, none stood out more than Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman. Freeman hit home run after home run in the first four games, becoming the first player to achieve a home run streak across multiple World Series games.
“It seems like we hit every speed bump possible over this year,” Freeman said. “To overcome what we did as a group of guys is special. This is what we set out to do every single spring training: to win a championship. I think it’s the hardest thing to do in sports because you just never know what’s going to happen.”
Before the World Series, the Dodgers faced multiple absences due to key players’ injuries, leading them to rely on every member of the roster. Their gamble paid off, with each player stepping up to push the team through to victory.
“One thing is that we just kept going,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told ESPN. “Even in the postseason, I don’t think anyone had us picked to get out of the first series. For us to go out there and fight, scratch, and claw to win 11 games in October—that’s a credit to our guys.”
According to ESPN, the current Dodgers team became the first in five years to win multiple World Series titles while maintaining a winning percentage of .640. The last team to accomplish this was the Yankees from 1953 to 1957.
The Dodgers’ monumental win will be celebrated with a parade on Friday in Los Angeles. The date will also honor former Dodgers player Fernando Valenzuela, who passed away just days before the 2024 World Series began.
