This Tuesday, Warner Bros. Pictures released the second trailer for the live-action adaption of the iconic children’s doll “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
In December, the prequel trailer provided a nod to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” but didn’t reveal too much about the characters or storyline. However, the latest trailer opens with an aerial shot of the fantasy world BarbieLand, followed by Robbie as Barbie greeting Ken (Gosling) on the beach in a pink-and-white plaid sun hat and matching dress. However, we see that there is not only one Barbie and Ken doll but various iterations of the dolls.
The rest of the trailer reveals that the film will stay true to the theme of Barbie as we see her iconic bubblegum pink convertible, pink penthouse, and extensive wardrobe. The clip also gives a comical look at Barbie and Ken’s adult relationship, with Ken asking if he can spend the night at Barbie’s in one scene.
“To do what?” Barbie inquiries, to which Ken replies, “I’m actually not sure.”
Towards the end, the storyline is revealed that Barbie and Ken will be placed in the real world and forced to wrestle with the difficulties of no longer being just dolls. Alongside Robbie and Gosling, the film will feature performances from Issa Rae (Insecure), Simu Liu (Marvel’s Shang-Chi), Kate Mckinnon, Michael Centa, and British pop star Dua Lipa.
“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity, and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery…I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide,” Robbie says in a statement of the release.
The film is set to be released in theaters only nationwide on July 21st, 2023, and beginning nationally on July 19, 2023.
