It comes as no surprise that less than a year after the release of Marvel’s movie “Eternals,” starring Gemma Chan and Richard Madden, it has been announced that a sequel to this film is already in the works. However, out of the 34 MCU movies created, “Eternals” has been the worst-rated by critics and deemed as generally the worst Marvel movie overall, scoring 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. A leak revealed that the second movie is currently “in the works,” but reports have said that director Chloé Zhao, also known for Academy Award Winning “Nomadland,” may not return to direct the second installment of “Eternals.” While the film did receive high praise, fans have said that the essence of the movie will be completely lost if Chloé Zhao does not direct the second one, or if she is restricted in her creativity whatsoever.
The reception of “Eternals” in November of 2021 even dipped far below “Thor: The Dark World” and “Iron Man 2,” which previously held the lowest ratings, with 66% and 72%, respectively. While some fans enjoyed the introduction of many new characters in “Eternals,” which creatively shadowed iconic DC characters, such as Superman and Batman, that are rivals to the Marvel universe, others argued that there is an overkill of characters that is overwhelming. One critic shared that “the action choreography is dull, and the visuals are equally bland… there’s nothing to strengthen most of the sequences; no emotional hook or character moments to be found. It ends up just being repeated scenes of super people punching bad guys.” In addition, the love story between the two main characters of Ikaris and Sersi has been said to lack all chemistry or spark, making it hard to watch and root for.
However, even with all of the criticisms, it seems that “Eternals 2” will still be filmed and MCU fans can most likely expect a trailer by the end of the year or in early 2023.
